forests<\/h2>\n<p>The project undertook a major review of the academic literature to help generate estimates of the <a href=\"https:\/\/primaryforestsandclimate.org\/publications\/how-much-is-that-forest-worth\/\">economic value of the world's forests<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong class=\"orange-text\">Important forest regions and ecological zones are under-studied <\/strong>- There is an absence of studies from important forest regions, such as the tropical rainforests in Central Africa and the boreal and temperate forests of North America and Russia.<\/li>\n<li><strong class=\"orange-text\">Bias towards market pricing valuation techniques<\/strong>\u00a0- Economic valuation studies are dominated with market pricing approaches, which emphasise forest management that maximizes industrial production instead of long-term social benefits, such as carbon storage and water quality improvements.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#trade-offs\"><strong class=\"orange-text\">Failure to evaluate trade-offs between values<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0- There is a disregard for the range of other values\u2014 i.e., underestimated, or lost values (the \u2018opportunity costs\u2019) when extractive uses, such as logging and clearing for mining and agriculture take precedence.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We also produced a <a href=\"https:\/\/primaryforestsandclimate.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/ForestValuesPolicy_Final-with-Author7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free policy brief<\/a> to support this work.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-w63a02f2008511-0-1\" textwidget\">\n\t<h2 style=\"margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;\">Evaluating trade-offs between forest values<\/h2>\n<p>Most studies of the economic value of forests focus on\u00a0the value of a single ecosystem\u00a0service, rather than\u00a0estimating a fuller set of values. This is because the purpose of the study is to find evidence \u00a0it is being managed in\u00a0a way that maximises the benefit from that specific ecosystem service.<\/p>\n<p>For example, a forest managed for industrial production\u00a0of timber can generate a very high value for the timber as an ecosystem service. \u00a0This value is then captured\u00a0by private interests, often straight away.<\/p>\n<p>However, this singular\u00a0value needs to be considered in the context of\u00a0the costs of the \u2018environmental externalities\u2019\u00a0(that is, negative impacts) that result from that extractive use. Communities also face pressure (and can see economic benefit from) more extractive forest management practices and clearing for commercial agriculture and mining.<\/p>\n<p>Primary forest conservation needs to be placed in the context of livelihoods support and economic development aspirations of forest communities. Conservation schemes need to carefully understand the specific deforestation drivers in an area and also what incentives might be effective in discouraging forest degradation and removal.<\/p>\n<p>Our project undertook a number of studies that provide insight into <em>what benefits<\/em> and <em>what value of benefits<\/em> might be effective in encouraging communities to manage primary forest regions in a way that can meet both climate and biodiversity goals and ensure equitable benefits sharing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-w635cbf23847f9-0-0-1\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-last-child\" data-index=\"1\" ><div class=\"keypoint-block panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-w635cbf23847f9-0-0-1\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h3>Key findings<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Communities can have a preference for compensation in the form of community assets, such as medical centres and schools<\/li>\n<li>Where cash has good utility (i.e. in places where it can buy things) a level of cash payment can be preferred<\/li>\n<li>When projects invest in community engagement, there can be greater acceptance of compensation schemes<\/li>\n<li>There can be an aspiration for the continued development of farming and so compensation schemes may inadvertently stir-up future land use tensions if the design of the scheme does not reconcile agricultural development and
